Disadvantages of Funds of Funds
Potentially higher fees. Whether it’s a bank, broker or consultant who sets up a fund of funds, this manager usually earns a fee on top of the fees charged by the underlying hedge funds. This clearly adds an additional layer of costs to investing in FoFs. So much so, that there’s an industry joke referring to them as “fees of fees funds.” A 2002 survey by UBS revealed that typical fund of funds management fees were roughly 1% of assets, with an incentive of up to 10% on capital gains.
Limited redemption rights. As with some hedge funds, an investor in a fund of funds may be limited to when and how much money he can withdraw. Some funds of funds have “gates” and “lock-ups” on investor cash. Lock-ups are periods during which investors must commit their money. Lock-up periods can last several years. Gates are limits on the percentage of capital an investor can withdraw on a particular redemption date. Both gates and lock-ups limit an investor’s ability to redeem or cash in his investment. Hedge fund managers use gates and lock-ups to protect against a stampede of redemptions that could destroy their fund, something we’ve seen in the recent market crash, where some hedge funds suffered massive redemptions.
Complex tax structure. Hedge funds are set up as partnerships, with each investor a limited partner in the fund. Thus, each partner is responsible for a proportionate share of the profits and expenses. And each investor has to pay taxes on capital gains, even if they won’t receive any cash until they exit the fund. A fund of fund therefore adds another layer of complexity on top of this, given that a fund of funds aggregates the profits, expenses and taxes owed from each hedge fund in the fund.
Transparency. You must rely on the fund of fund’s manager’s talent and expertise to research the background, reputation and track record of the underlying hedge fund managers. You are dependent on this manager’s expertise to choose managers wisely and keep you informed on the status of each fund.

You are right
Too many complaints and issues re Goldman
Like UK Government being advised to sell its Gold back in 1997 at 275 an ounce whilst others within the group are buying Gold!!!
and now Gold is 900 plus!
The list grows re incompetence and how they dodge any real and true responsibility,
but just threaten legal recourse and try and behave like a bully in the playground !!

Reading about what the Firm is trying to do ? i agree , you do require all the support possible. Goldman Sachs if the truth is unravelled is more caught up in so much devious games, that undermine the supposed illusion that the financial markets are fair game! Remembering whether we go back to deals like Deutsch Telecom and Ron Summers and when Voicestream , advised by Goldman was purchased – even though Goldman had a conflict of interest as they were in pre IPO on this US company, and now were seeking an exit , and what better than a German utility , that they were advising, and encouraging DT ,overpaying for such an asset- 3 years laetr it was written down by over 70 percent. RBS deal with the Dutch, even though Merrill name is everywhere as adviser, Goldman too was there and taking fees for what !! Please do not give up- the work has only started as Goldman is truly dangerous to the democratic nature of amrkets – they have excelled at being coniving, and using political contacts beyond anything reasonable.

Draper and Mc Bride is a disgrace and the former should return to the Priory and get back on medication- as New Labour should this time close all relationships with this individual, as back in 1998 was bad enough but to create more mess 11 years later, PLEASE.
Number 10 should apologise but first review all spin , and who is working this spin, as with the economy in still a crisis, more attention should be about who is Darling’s replacement and whether the leader is creative and ballsy ,
to try and appoint Vince .Cable as the best replacement, and future electoral asset!
STOP the wasteful and destructive spin about lurid supposed personal details , which 99 per cent of the public do not care- we have gay MPs we have Lords who crawl the streets for working girls, we have MPs sleeping together boys and girls respectively- so please there is no more original sleaze as Prince of Darkness has excelled what has been written or suggested!!
